Title: High-quality coal-alternative solid fuel production from biomass and wastes
Bio: Dr. Kunio Yoshikawa is a professor emeritus at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, CEO of EcoMEET Solutions Co. Ltd, and CTO of ReEnergiX Inc., Japan. His major research areas include energy conversion, thermal engineering, combustion, gasification, waste treatment technologies, and atmospheric environmental engineering. He has authored more than 250 papers and supervised 57 PhD students.
His main awards include the AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) Best Paper Award (1999), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) James Harry Potter Gold Medal (2001), JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) Environmental Technology Achievement Award (2006), Fellow of JSME (2008), Best Educator Award of Tokyo Institute of Technology (2014), and Best Editor Award of the Applied Energy journal (2020).
Introduction: For reducing CO2 emissions from coal-fired stations, co-firing biomass with coal is the most realistic solution. However, due to the low crushability of biomass, it is difficult to increase the mixing ratio of biomass using the existing coal mills. Prof. Yoshikawa has developed an innovative hydrothermal treatment technology (HTT) to produce black pellets from biomass and wastes that have similar crushability to coal by utilizing high-pressure (around 2-3MPa) saturated steam. Any kind of burnable material can be converted into coal-like granular products, and only 10-15% of the products are enough as fuel for steam production in a boiler. In this presentation, commercial experiences and future developments of HTT planned for implementation in Vietnam will be introduced, focusing on the treatment of municipal solid waste, medical waste, sewage sludge, and empty fruit bunch (EFB).
